The Cold Chills; Past, Present & Jimmy Le

A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE COLD CHILLS / NEW BEGINNINGS

Through the years The Cold Chills have evolved and adapted in terms of personality and mind set, while maintaining and staying true to their characteristic groove rock sound.  Aaron and Rob moved to L.A. around the same time in 2007.  They immediately started jamming and experimenting with a few original songs Aaron had put together.  They soon brought in guitarist Zeke Middleton, Aaron's old band mate from Salt Lake, who was living in LA at the time. After a few months of songwriting and sound experimentation, they had a nice set of new songs put together.

They added bass player extraordinaire, Ferrari Watts to provide some low end sound to the material.

Aaron's Tribeca Film Festival compadre', friend, & guitarist, Kevin Crowley

Kevin

moved to L.A. & joined the band and added a ripping second guitar to help complete the Cold Chills original lineup and establish the characteristic rock sound displayed on their 2010 self titled debut LP release.

Noah Peters

noah 2.bw

joined the lineup in 2011 and added his monster riff style to help polish off recording The Cold Chills sophomore album, "Lighter in the Shadows."

The Cold Chills slimmed down to a 4 piece lineup in 2012 and brought in Jonathan Decker on bass to help complete the melodic 3 song EP release, "Coasting."  The Cold Chills capped off 2012 by completing their very 1st music video for the single "Cali Coast".

The Cold Chills, from the very beginning, has been an institution for like minded individuals, and a brotherhood of songwriters, who would like nothing better than to express their soul through solid Rock and Roll at it's finest.

We'd like to thank the founding members of the Cold Chills for their individual passionate contributions, blood, sweat, and soul.  You have helped build The Cold Chills to the dignified sound we have today.  Thank you brothers, you will always be a part of the Cold Chills fraternity. Much Love!

The Cold Chills @ The Viper Room, Thurs Aug, 23rd!

It's amazing how bartending in LA can turn into a straight marketing job.

I (Noah, the guitar player) work at a super chill restaurant in Hollywood called Baby Blues. For a struggling artist it's the perfect job. Good money, cool people, minimal bullshit. PLUS there's one more additional perk: people always want to talk to me. "What are you working on?" "How's the band?" "When's your next show?" Incidentally, I end up doing marketing half the time. For instance, my promoter friend Alicia comes to the bar. "Hey, do The Cold Chills want the August 23rd slot at The Viper Room?" "Sure." One thing done. (next club date for the cold chills, check.)

Two nights later my manager Chad shows me what he's been working on. It's a Holster for beer. You heard me correct, a western style six-shooter holster for beer bottles/cans that he custom designs ( theholstar.com ). "Hey Chad, you want to design some custom Cold Chills holsters for our show at The Viper Room?" "Sure."  Cool marketing merch for the band, check!

A week later Lauren, our Black Star beer rep, comes to the bar. What's Black Star? It's basically like Montana's PBR. ( http://blackstarbeer.com/ ) She's super excited. "What's up, Lauren" "I finally got Black Star in at The Viper Room!"  "No shit?!  My band's playing there on the 23rd." "Really?! We should do beer specials!" Awesome!  Great beer promotion for our Viper show, check!

So come see the Cold Chills at The Viper Room Thursday August 23rd at 10:30. Enjoy 3$ cans of Black Star. Maybe get yourself a Cold Chills Holster so you can go hands free. Oh yeah, and you'll get to rock out.

You're welcome.

THE AUDITION: How Jon came to be Cold Chillin!

It was a warm Wednesday evening when I parked in front of the Grimelab for the first time. I grabbed my bass from the back seat of my dirty black Civic and called Rob to let him know I was there. I don’t like to walk in unannounced the first time I show up somewhere. It just seems rude.

Rob walked out toward the street to greet me and we chatted as we walked around to the studio, where I met Aaron and Noah. Everyone seemed pretty cool. We talked about music and personal history while I set up my bass and got ready for the audition; a few stretches, finger exercises, going over bass lines. I had learned three Cold Chills songs for the audition, and we went through each one a few times. I thought it sounded pretty damn good! And the guys didn’t seem to think I sucked, which was what I really wanted to hear.

“So hey, good times guys, that went well!”

“Yea! We’ve got a few other people auditioning, so we’ll let you know by Friday for sure.”

“Cool man, sounds good!”

They did not let me know by Friday. I actually went through the entire audition process without getting nervous at all, but when I wasn’t told by Friday that I did or did not have the gig… THAT made me nervous. I’ve auditioned for bands before, and occasionally I haven’t gotten the gig. It isn’t a big deal for me. But not knowing? THAT is a completely different situation. And when I finally did hear back from Rob on Sunday, he asked me to come back for another audition.

“It’s down to you and one other guy,” the email read.

So let me stop the story at this point and give you a bit of personal history. Maybe I should’ve started with this, but hey, I like Quentin Tarantino. I had been looking for a good ol’ fashioned ROCK band for a little bit before I ran into the Cold Chills. Before I joined them, I had been working with a lot of programming, synthesizers and MIDI controllers for years. It was definitely time to get back into a straight-ahead rock band and play some solid, stanky grooves. When I came across the Cold Chills, I knew I wanted the gig.

So skip back to Sunday night. The guys wanted me to learn three more songs for a second audition that Wednesday. No problem. Except this time, I couldn’t stop psyching myself out! I should have been confident in my playing of the songs, but I was over-thinking everything. The worst mistake a musician can make.

Wednesday night rolled around again, and I showed up nervous as hell. I left the second rehearsal feeling like crap. I thought I had screwed up every song. The boys were nice to me, of course, but I could feel the fact that the OTHER GUY must be better, he must be the one they chose…

So I said my goodbyes, told the Cold Chills I was looking forward to hearing their decision, and drove home. Upon my arrival I promptly poured myself a glass of Jameson. My girlfriend was asleep already and so I went to quietly drown my nerves. As I was sitting on my condo’s balcony, staring at the nearly-full moon and sipping my whiskey, wondering how I could have let myself sabotage this second audition, my phone vibrates. It was a text message from Rob, followed by one each from Noah and Aaron, all of them welcoming me to the band. Awwww, thanks guys. I would have not slept that night if it weren’t for those text messages.

I’m really excited to be a part of the Cold Chills. I’ve played in many groups and with many talented musicians, but none with the combination of energy, drive and commitment to the music as these guys. We’ve already been working on new music since I’ve joined and I’m stoked to be a part of the process! Please keep checking back in with us, more new new new things ahead!
